Power Section Elastomers
Oil-Based Muds:
Oil-based muds and muds that contain oil can reduce stator
life. The degree of stator damage depends on the specific
chemistry of the oils used. Some oils react very little with
elastomers while others are highly reactive. Tests for mud-elastomer
compatibility may be conducted with the fluids are anticipated.
Contact your Dyna-Drill® representative for testing in your
specific application. Due to severe degradation of elastomers
exposed to drilling fluids above 260 F, Dyna-Drill® strongly
recommends that elastomer compound selection be based on fluid
compatibility testing.
Mud Additives:
Certain mud additives, such as emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors,
and scavengers, can (even in very small quantities) cause
elastomer failure.
Water-Based Muds:
The adhesives used to bond elastomers can undergo hydrolysis
when exposed to water, especially at temperatures in excess
of 200 F. Bond-strength degradation can trigger a multitude
of problems from minor to catastrophic. Selecting stator
rubber compounds in water-based systems should be based on
the recommendations in the “Power Sections” table below.
Emulsified Systems:
Emulsified systems that contain a mixture of oil and water
require laboratory testing for a specific application. A
balance is required for the swell resistance of an HSN versus
the bond strength of an NBR.
